Guidelines for Preparing the Publication of Articles and Their Layout in the scientific electronic journal of Journalism Faculty of Lomonosov Moscow State University “Mediascope”

I. Requirements to the material

According to the Code of ethics for scientific articles, the author (or a group of authors) must be aware that they are initially responsible for the novelty and accuracy of the research results, which means observance of the following principles:

    • The authors must present accurate results of the research they have conducted. Admittedly erroneous or falsified statements are unacceptable.
    • The authors must ensure that the research results described in the submitted manuscript are completely original.   Borrowed fragments are to be accompanied with a reference to the author and the primary source used. Excessive borrowing and any forms of plagiarism, including citations without quotation marks, paraphrasing or appropriating rights to others’ research, are unethical and unacceptable.
    • It is essential to acknowledge the contribution of those people who, in this way or another, influenced the course of the research, in particular, the article must be supplied with references to the works that played a role in conducting the research.
    • It is against the rules to submit a manuscript which is under consideration by another publication or an article that has been published in another journal.
    • All contributors to the research are to be mentioned among the co-authors of the article. Mentioning those who did not participate in the research is forbidden.
    • If the author discovers significant errors or inaccuracies in the article while it is under consideration or after it has been published, he is supposed to inform the editors of the journal as soon as possible.

The Code of ethics for scientific articles has been worked out and approved by the Committee of ethics of scientific articles. The current text of the Code is permanently available at www.publicet.org/code

Apart from that, the authors are required to use an interdisciplinary approach, mention the research techniques they applied, maintain factual and historical accuracy and adhere to scientific style of speech.

II. Guidelines for submitting the material

The article is presented according to the “Guidelines for the layout of the material and submitted to the editorial office of the journal in electronic form. The authors are requested to send the material to the executive secretary of the journal Elena Kuzmina (e-mail is xelena-k@mail.ru , the topic of the letter is “for Mediascope journal”) or to the coordinator of the work at the Institute “Higher School of Journalism and Mass Communication” of St. Petersburg State University Zalina Khubetsova (e-mail is mediaskop-spb@mail.ru , the topic of the letter is “for Mediascope journal”). Additional information for PhD students and PhD degree-seeking students:

The electronic scientific journal “Mediascope” accepts the articles written only by the PhD students of the second year of study and older (materials of PhD students of the first year are not accepted). PhD students and PhD degree-seeking students are required to attach to the article an extract from the minutes of the chair meeting where the article was discussed, along with a recommendation to publish the material in the journal. The extract must be certified with the seal of the organization giving the recommendation, it must include the number and date of the minutes, the name of the higher educational institution and the chair, the supervisor’s surname, first name and patronymic, his/her contact phone number and/or e-mail.

Without an extract and a recommendation, the articles by PhD students and PhD degree-seeking students will not be published!

Extracts and recommendations can be left in the folder inscribed “Mediascope” at the Dean’s Office of the faculty.

III. Procedure for refereeing

Attention please!

According to the requirements of the Higher Attestation Commission (VAK) to publication in a scientific journal, all articles are invariably subject to refereeing. In the electronic scientific journal “Mediascope” double blind refereeing is standard practice (the author has no idea who referees his/her article while two referees do not know either who the submitter of the article is). The right to choose the referee belongs to the editorial staff and the editorial board. All the referees are recognized experts in the subject matter of the refereed materials and have had articles published on the subject matter of the refereed paper over the past three years. The referee reports are kept in the publishing house and in the editorial office of the publication for 5 years. At the author’s request, the referees’ comments may be sent over to him/her just for information. If the article is rejected, the referees’ detailed comments containing the reasons for rejection are sent over to the author on a mandatory basis.

In accordance with p. 8 of the "Requirements to the refereed scientific publications to be included in the List of Refereed Scientific Publications wherein the main scientific results of candiate's theses and doctoral theses are to be published", the editorial board of the Mediascope electronic scientific journal directs the copies of referee reports to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation when a corresponding inquiry is sent to the editorial board of the journal.

Members of the editorial staff and/or the editorial board get acquainted with the original text of the article and, if necessary, make corrections to the text.

IV. Guidelines for the layout of the material

The text of the article must be clearly structured and divided into subchapters. The recommended size of the article is from 20,000 up to 40,000 characters with spaces.

At the top of the article, the submitter is required to put his/her surname, first name and patronymic (in full!), place of employment and position, the full name of the higher educational institution and the chair, the contact phone number and e-mail.

The title of the article must be set in semi-bold type in 14-point size. The title and the information about the author must be given in Russian and in English.

The article must be supplied with an abstract and key words. The abstract, no larger than 10 lines, must contain such matters as topicality of the research, its objective, the materials and methods used, the issues in focus and the main conclusions. The key words (not more than 5) are the list of words representing the basic content of the text. Both the abstract and the key words must be given in Russian and in English.

The text of the article must be created in the doc (docx) format and set in Times New Roman font in 12-point size with 1.5 line spacing.

If the author uses a foreign name, at its first mention the Russian transliteration in inverted commas should be followed by the original name in brackets, for example, «Чикаго Трибьюн» (Chicago Tribune), after which only the former should be used.

Special attention should be given to references. These must be in the form of endnotes generated automatically and numbered with Arabic numerals; Russian endnotes must be additionally transliterated in Latin alphabet. For transliteration, it is advisable to use the BGN/PCGN standard (United States Board on Geographic Names / Permanent Committee on Geographical Names for British Official Use) recommended by the International Publishing House Oxford University Pressas British Standard. To competently transliterate in accordance with the BGN standard, one can avail oneself of the link http://ru.translit.ru/?account=bgn, where the process is done automatically.
