Abstract

The article analyzes the influence of the Catalan national press on emancipation and the struggle for gender equality. Feminist ideas were firmly entrenched among the representatives of the progressive part of Catalan society at the very beginning of the last century, and over the century they played an important role in shaping the identity of the Catalan nation.

At the beginning of the 20th century, radical leftist ideas became popular in the region, and the Marxist version of feminism became one of the elements of the social transformation program that the Republicans planned to carry out after getting power. But the Civil War ended with the victory of General Franco, who was a leader of conservative wing of Spanish society and an opponent of the emancipation of women. Gender roles had to be allocated traditionally, and feminism was banned.

Despite the ban by the Franco regime, ideas of the struggle for women's rights developed in Catalonia during the years of dictatorship, and over the past 30 years a new flowering of political feminism has been observed. The article examines how the modern and historical media of Catalonia regulated the feminist discourse in the region, what opinions on the subject had different publications and how the experience of the past is reflected in the works of modern Catalan journalists.

Keywords: political feminism, Catalonian press, journalism in Spain, catalanism, Maria Luz Morales, Rosa Maria Arquimbau.
