Abstract

The article presents the results of the benchmark survey aimed at studying the news consumption of journalism students of the Lomonosov MSU. The survey is based on the data of media diaries filled by the respondents in April 2017, as well as essays, where they described their typical interaction with the media.

The analysis has shown that the Internet and social media are the key news channels for the students, while the role of traditional media in this regard is extremely negligible. Students consume information content constantly throughout the day. At the same time, they rarely read materials to the end, and in most cases they don`t go beyond the headlines presented in the news feeds in personal accounts. Despite the fact that social media allow young people monitoring the agenda in the background, the respondents don`t always perceive them as a media resource. In addition to social networks, journalism students constantly turn to the sites of professional media – information agencies, TV channels, print and online media outlets. From the point of view of the subject, they give clear preference to news of politics, economy, and society.

It`s worth mentioning that many students talk about the lack of personal interest to news and associate the need for their consumption entirely with their professional duties, as well as with the influence of their surroundings. This suggests that the media consumption of students of other specialties (not journalism) can be significantly different, which opens a new field for further studies.

Keywords: media consumption, news consumption, news resources, the Internet as a media resource, digital generation.
