Abstract

The article considers the problem of future journalists' sociological competence improvement. The authors argue that sociology is absolutely necessary academic discipline for journalists. For future journalists the discipline is the basic one for the development of the ability to analyze social processes rationally and of the skills of using sociological data. The empirical basis of the study consists of the results of online-survey conducted among teachers of sociology from universities that have journalism courses. The survey shows that sociology is taught in each university where journalism is studied. Nevertheless number of classes and content of the sociology course differ from university to university. In some of them sociological training is based on such courses as "Sociology" or "Basic Sociology" that are aimed at development of rational sociological attitude, while others concentrate on "Journalism Sociology" and "Media Sociology" that are more applied. The combination of fundamental and applied approaches is rare. Respondents describe lack of time and motivation among students to study sociology as teachers' problems. The authors conclude that a "client-oriented" educational strategy with a teacher as a central person must be embedded in the way sociology is taught. Such teacher actively looks for and implements new ways of practice-oriented sociological knowledge transmitting using team work technology. They motivate students to search for fundamental knowledge that allows them to solve applied problems.
