Abstract
In this article the author examines the history and specificity of the orientation, content and structure of the Luxembourg Catholic periodical Journal historique et littéraire. This journal is the successor of the first Luxembourg periodical Key to the European Princes' Cabinet, or the Historical and Political Collection of Recent Materials (La Clef du cabinet des princes de l'Europe ou recuëil historique & politique sur les matieres du tems) and in many respects continues its tradition, but has its own distinctive features.
The development of the magazine was greatly influenced by a personality of its editor, a former Jesuit, François-Xavier de Feller, who defended the position of religion and the church, both greatly weakened by the Enlightenment. In his journal de Feller criticized the Enlightenment philosophers, the reforms of Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II and many of his contemporary literary works.
He fought passionately for the "true religion", "true philosophy" and "true literature": "true religion" in his opinion was Catholicism, "true philosophy" - the philosophy of Christian morality and as "true literature" he classified solely highly moral, talented works.
According to some scholars, Journal historique et littéraire ("Historical and literary magazine") is a precursor of Luxembourg Catholic newspapers of the 19th century, the century of the Catholic press glory.
Keywords: Luxembourg, periodical, Historical and literary magazine, François-Xavier de Feller.
